It's not nearly so bad as it used to be. Our trip this summer to Seattle and back was a little delayed—roughly 20 minutes—on the way home. Amtrak is much improved, I think.

I'm thinking of a similar Amtrak trip next summer. Thanks for the heads-up about how flexible I'll need to be.

I was impressed with the South African goalkeeper. He made a lot of great saves, and the one goal that he let in, he had no chance of saving. The save where he had to dive to his left, upper corner was gorgeous.

Well. Okay, if we're considering imaginary carbon offsets then we should weigh the power consumed by our computers and the power consumed by the servers we're accessing and the heat generated all along the way, not to mention the time wasted which could have been used to do something that was actually real, in order to send someone an imaginary plant so that we feel we've done our good deed to help the planet.
I doubt that it's getting people to think about conserving resources. It's getting people to think that they've actually done something rather than less than nothing, which is the more accurate calculation.

As I read the article, the rental management company (though not the owners) were found negligent because they did not inform the tenants that the screens on the windows would not restrain a child pushing against them.

Alleged stupidity aside (and, as parents, we ALL have stupid moments), what was the argument that was made against the landlord? Was it some alleged overlooking of safety standards?

It sounds like the little girl turned out okay.

I would not want to own rental property merely because I have enough of a maintenance backlog on my own house without adding any more to it.
