We sold our 1997 Lexus ES 300 on Friday night for $7,000 in cash. (Literally. Lots of $100 bills and a few $50s for good measure. I’ve never held so much paper currency.)

We don’t need three cars, and the Lexus was clear the one to sell since it got the worst mileage (19/25 but premium gas) and was worth the most money. We’ll use the money to finish off the exterior wall in the family room, to put cabinets in the garage, and to pad the savings account with the remainder.

While I love the Honda Odyssey minivan I’m driving the kids around in, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Lexus. It’s a wonderful ride, and the early ’90s Honda Civic that’s taken its place in the garage is no comparison. True, the Civic is comparatively very inexpensive to drive, but I would not be surprised at all if we traded it in on a Honda Fit this fall.
