Bluesky seems to have the bones for being a really good Twitter replacement. You have a lot of control over your feed, things appear chronologically, and there’s thus far a pretty positive vibe around what this could be.

The biggest question mark right now is whether they can scale. At 20 million users, there’s simply not that many people or organizations to follow or interact with yet.

But it’s early, and I suppose that’s part of the throwback charm. I remember when, say, Facebook’s feed was under user control and didn’t overwhelm with ads. It was kind of great (and a far cry from virtually useless feed we get now).

Social media is good, I think, for very specific, controlled uses. I think it’s pretty terrible, almost regardless of platform, for general, uncontrolled use.

The use case for Bluesky is the same as Twitter’s used to be: You can follow subject matter experts directly and the possibility of interaction if you have questions. The rise of bots, ads, misinformation, etc. have rendered Twitter far less useful for this purpose. We’ll see what the future holds for Bluesky.
