Nike’s Converse brand apologizes, removes ad after backlash over racist imagery – oregonlive.com:
The sneaker company Converse has removed a social media ad that sparked outrage among critics who viewed it as evoking the Ku Klux Klan and lynching.
The Instagram ad photo showed K-pop singer Karina wearing a skirt and holding a pair of Chuck 70 X sneakers. Critics lashed out online, saying that a white triangular image created by lighting on the skirt resembled a KKK hood and that the way she held the sneakers made them look like the dangling feet of a lynching victim.
I’m hardly Nike’s biggest fan, but this is stoopid with two ohs. Like most media outlets The Oregonian provides no links or other opportunities to judge for yourself with the ad in question is racist (it’s not), so you’re forced to accept the judgment of others—something you should in this day and age almost never do. The also link the Nike/Converse ad to Target’s truly racist Halloween costume from last month (seen here: https://x.com/PopBase/status/2092086473793183892).
Anyway, judge the Nike/Converse ad for yourself here: https://x.com/OneMeghanElinor/status/2101462602979152091
The only thing I see is pretend moral outrage.
