This is going to be one of those weeks:

  • Time to postpone any Mexico travel plans, especially to Puerto Vallarta. The level of drug cartel-based danger is far higher than many of us (me for one) appreciated, even in supposedly safe tourist areas.
  • Iran’s fundamentalist Islamic regime has been at least tacitly at war with the US since 1979. That adverb likely leaves in the next few days. Freeing the people of Iran from the tyranny of the rulers who’ve killed tens if not hundreds of thousands would be an enormous step forward.
  • Is it possible to lose an Olympics any more thoroughly than Canada just did? Forget the actual competition. Their behavior has been abysmal. From whining about hockey to cheating at curling, they’ve really taken a reputational blow. (The exception here is snowboarder Julliette Pelchat whose wholehearted cheering for fellow competitors was a thing of beauty.)
