Tim Cremere, 1969-2005
Various memories: Tim was with me in Mrs. Harris' third grade class at Liberty Elementary. I remember Tim as the best athlete in the class. He was strong for his age and very competitive. Mrs. Harris had a game with a Nerf ball where everyone would sit on their desks and we'd throw the ball around to each other. If you dropped the ball or...
Wearing out the weekend
We had a delightful time seeing everyone at the Ogle's for a pseudo-surprise birthday party for Bruce. Ginger's got better observations than I on this topic, so let me take this opportunity to encourage you to check her new Ogle Family blog. There's even an RSS/Atom feed for those of you who, like me, prefer to get at the web content that way. Let me only...
Having a (mostly) great time
Honestly had a great time at Adam and Nena's wedding reception on Sunday night. Loved meeting their friends and seeing family. Definitely a good time had by all. Our best wishes and hopes to them for a long and happy life together. Did not have such a great time working on the house this week. After spending many muscle-aching hours up on the roof cleaning...
A few final thoughts on FEMA; a week in review
It's not like the pseudo-sacking of FEMA director Mike Brown will change the past, but one has to feel at least marginally better about the future. FEMA needs a whole lot of institutional change, though, and we can only hope that the hue and cry raised by so many in the face of FEMA's incompetence this time around will yield dividends going forward....
Don’t worry, FEMA’s in charge
Frustrated: Fire crews to hand out fliers for FEMA It would be funny if it weren't so sad.
Continuing the tragedy
One bloggers list of recent FEMA screw-ups, any of which ought be a fireable offense. Meanwhile, Bush Says He'll Find Out What Went Wrong, which is to say that he'll begin investigating himself. The least he should do—the very least—is to fire FEMA director Mike Brown. The FEMA response has been a national disgrace, but perhaps it has pulled...
The tragedy of New Orleans
Many right-wing pundits have made the case that during New Orleans' mandatory evacuation the city should have fired up the school and metro area buses and loaded folks up and taken them out of town. I think that's a good deal of Monday morning quarterbacking. Pre-disaster, where exactly are you going to bus tens of thousands of people? The logistics are...
Davison family health
My mom returned home from the hospital this morning. She's now able to eat solid foods again, which is a pretty substantial upgrade from the ice chips she's been limited to for most of the past week. She's still pretty weak from the surgery, using a walker to get up and around, but every day I've seen her she's appeared stronger, so I'm certain it's just a...
Mom update
OK, so my mom is out of the intensive care unit (ICU). I saw her again this evening, and she's starting to get back to her old chipper self. The emergency surgery she had Monday night was to repair a stomach hernia. Unfortunately, the hernia that had opened up also sucked in some of the bowel and bladder, resulting in an intestinal blockage. So the surgeon...
A jolt
My dad called us last night while were at the Motel 6 in Weed to give us the jolting news that my mom had gone in for emergency hernia surgery. I'm not medically knowledgeable enough to say much more than it is serious stuff (all the more so since Mom had a liver transplant in the late '80s. ) I saw her this evening, and right now Mom is pretty weak and...
