2006:

After a joyous Christmas in Salem and another in Los Altos, we have returned bright-eyed and bushy tailed to march firmly into 2006. Except replace "bright-eyed and bushy tailed" with "sick as a dog with cold and flu symptoms" and change "march firmly" into "slither exhaustedly." I'm reasonably confident I got the year right, though. Despite this...

Merry Christmas!

Dad's safely tucked away in a South Salem rehabilitation center, and other than being exhausted from all the rehab work and not having much of an appetite, he's doing very well. He faces a long and arduous rehabilitation in the months ahead, but I'm confident that he'll be good as gold by summer. The Davisons will be celebrating Christmas part 1 at our...

Getting out

Despite a fall during physical therapy last weekend, Dad will be leaving OHSU for a physical rehabilitation center tomorrow. The fall set him back a couple of days on the rehab, but he's moving forward again, and hopefully he's as eager to return to Salem as we are to have him back in town. The rehab center is located not more than 5 minutes from our...

Hurray for the holidays

Dad continues his steady march of improvement. We'll be taking the kids to see him later this morning which we're hoping will be a nice pick-me-up, since he's seen neither Jonah nor Elisha since he got sick back in October. That's a long time to go with out your grandchild fix. Earlier in the week, the kids and I spent a couple hours over at Matt and...

Motorola E815 + Verizon Wireless

I've acquired a cell phone, specifically a Motorola E815. I continue to contend that 95 percent of the time these things are utterly unnecessary and more of a hassle than not, but let me tell you, during that 5 percent of the time when you really need one, you really need one. At this point, my mom, my brother, and my aunt are all on Verizon—which...

Hope flourishes

My mom and I visited Dad yesterday at OHSU. His shingles have abated so Mom was cleared to gown up and visit, and, having missed a little over a week of his recovery, she was stunned at his improvement. It was great to see them together again. He was fully awake and lucid the entirety of our roughly three hour visit and though he's physically rather weak,...

Hobbling toward health

I visited Dad last night at OHSU. He looked good and remained fully lucid the entirety of my visit, which clocked in at just under 3 hours. Early in the day as part of physical therapy he walked with help to the sink across the room and back. Said it was utterly exhausting work, but obviously it's great that he's starting to get up and around. We met Dr....

Out of ICU

Dad's journey toward full health continues. With assistance, he can stand up and take a couple steps to a chair. They have him sitting in the chair for a few hours a day. It tires him out, but that's hardly unexpected. He's getting a little oxygen assistance, but he doesn't use the mask anymore. All his vitals are good. It turns out that he does indeed...

Gobble, gobble

We visited Dad in ICU yesterday morning, and, other than hearing a fanciful tale about him taking a helicopter ride that AM from New York to "somewhere in Missouri" (and being upset because he didn't get a window seat), we found him rather lucid and coherent. Dad has always had very vivid dreams, and given all the meds he's on it's not surprising that...

Still in ICU, part 2

My Mom and I saw Dad last night for a couple hours. He's getting stronger, and I can definitely see improvement from my last visit on Tuesday. Vitals aside, he simply looks better. All positive trends are continuing. But he's still pretty groggy for the most part. Nurses say that he shows flashes of personality and humor throughout the day (particularly in...
